Yet, many companies today follow this process because they lack end-disposition knowledge. Reconditioning must start with the end in mind to be financially successful. Although all products can be raised to an "A" reconditioned standard, one's investment is wasted if the market can't absorb the reconditioned product, recover the investment in the secondary sales market, and/or if it competes directly with the manufacture's/retailer's new product offerings, causing a devaluation of MSRP.

TRG has pioneered Intelligent Dispositioning to solve these industry problems. Put simply, we understand there is a demand for all grades (A/B /C-grades, "as is", parts, or recycled material) and invest resources only if profitable. Through our established sales channels, we gather and analyze market information relating to market value for each product grade. Since all returned products aren't returned in the same condition, we realize the opportunity this affords us to recondition only to a level where cost, demand, and maximum profit can be obtained. This proven skill allows us to properly design a specialized program to exceed our partners' expectations. Because market pricing is constantly moving, we preform this analysis on an ongoing basis to protect our partners' profit margin.

The final step to the process is to ensure reconditioned product doesn't compete with new product MSRP. Light Repair: Light repair is a topological version of the part swap and part-harvesting model. Light repair will entail swapping any superficial parts that can be removed and replaced without disassembling the unit (ex. lids and carafes on coffee machines, snap on parts, removable parts, etc.)

TRG uses custom data erasure software based on low level formatting and DoD service level techniques. TRG software is designed to wipe 160 units simultaneously per workstation. All data erasure is tracked through the DLP as well as DB entries directly from the software, which is also capable of capturing other information such as computer hardware specifications (serial number, processor speed, RAM size, brand etc.)

Component Level Repair: Currently, TRG performs component-level repairs on high-value consumer electronics (video game systems, TV's, computers, and iPods/iPads) in a HEPA clean room. Component-level repairs are extremely valuable in situations such as the recent "bad capacitor" issue from China with computer motherboards. In this case, TRG was commissioned to replace the bad capacitors on new stock to eliminate the need for destruction. This saved the client time, credibility, customer service issues, and money.

Media resurfacing: TRG utilizes customized disc-resurfacing machinery to resurface media CD, DVD, UMD and Blue Ray Discs. Grading qualifications, guidelines and functionality testing are performed after the discs have been processed to ensure no read errors.

Data Wiping: It is extremely important to sanitize user data when resetting devices to default settings. Multiple passes of "Low Level"/"Zeroing Out" hard drives and solid-state memory ensure that data is removed and non-recoverable. Utilizing the latest methodologies for disk and data sanitization, TRG is NIST, DoD 5520.22-M - 5220-22-M, NISPOM, DSS compliant.


Returns Processing: All customer return product undergoes a standard triage to help identify which set of procedures would be best suited to maximize return. All products that pass through TRG are given a DLP (Digital License Plate), which can track the product through its entire lifecycle at TRG.

Initial test triage identifies NFF (no fault found) items. Removing NFF product quickly, allows for quick turnaround during the reconditioning process. This allows our customers to quickly return NFF product to inventory. All remaining faulty product is repaired, part harvested, liquidated, or recycled to obtain the highest possible recovery based on condition.

Test & Evaluate: Our core competencies are within the realm of consumer electronics and small appliances from basic plug and play testing through component-level repair models. Evaluation policies adhere to strict and standardized grading and cosmetic flaw identification.

Parts Swap: Current part swap strategies that are in place are complimentary with part harvesting strategies. Any good working units will be assessed for cosmetic grading after functionality is tested. These capabilities will allow the swapping of cosmetically and non-functioning parts to produce a like new unit from surplus parts obtained from part harvesting. TRG currently implements part swap/harvesting strategies on iPod, Zune, Wii, and Apple peripherals (Mice, keyboards, routers, Time Capsules, Apple TV, and Airports), TV's, computers, and small appliances.

Re-packaging: TRG has an in house design team that can customize packaging for Secondary Markets, to include everything from reconditioning disclaimers, to completely blank OEM packaging. Sourcing for original packaging is also an option. In cases where the packaging costs are required to stay at minimal values, original returned packaging can be reused with cardboard ironing, defacing, and cleaning.

Pick, Pack and Ship services: Service levels for pick, pack, and ship can range from simple drop shipping via TRG regional warehouses to as complex as full customer return management programs. A current example with a national electronics retailers is our iPod replacement program . Refurbished units are used to fill warranty-replacements orders. Customer-created software provides a platform to order, ship, manage, and report these services.


Data Collection/Inventory Management: Inventory management is centralized in EDI environments to ensure maximum compatibility with all of our business partners. Electronic and Manual checks and balances are setup at strategic points and thresholds to ensure data collection accuracy.

Custom software to perfectly fit a need is common at TRG. API integration with such online marketplaces as eBay, Amazon, Terapeak, Google Products and others to ensure a broad and relevant range of data collection.

Parts Harvesting: With slight modifications to the working, TRG can create a test bed to quickly exchange/hot swap parts to test for functionality. An example of an iPod test bed would allow the testing of LCD screen, scroll wheel, hold button, motherboard etc.

This process allows technicians to create functioning parts inventory to be used in the part swap procedures. Part Harvesting also ensures proper avenues of recycling are carried out for defective items. All defective units, pieces, parts and components are further separated to their primary components (Woods, Metals, Plastics) and recycled accordingly.

Recycling: Strategic partnerships with local area recyclers capture the best yield for raw materials and ensure overall reduction of our carbon footprint. TRG works closely with our recycling partners in a symbiotic relationship to help them identify secondary markets for salvage goods.

Parts / Accessory sourcing: In most cases, OEM parts are being sourced from our vendors, with options to replicate non-sourceable parts for ODM. TRG has even worked with our sourcing departments to create new and improved aftermarket replacement parts to address reoccurring failures.

Sales Analysis and Remarketing: The analytics team is able to obtain a clear and concise view of open market pricing (retail, trade-in, and secondary markets) based on all grades and conditions. We determine the end value of each condition of product before we ever purchase the product or physically touch the product. The result is the most accurate and up to date "window" to the sales and remarking world for virtually any consumer electronics on the market.

Firmware Upgrade: TRG has been contracted by many different manufacturers to apply firmware updates as locally run programs. This reduces transportation costs and customer service issues by avoiding reprogramming overseas as well as working out "glitches" that would typically flood customer support call centers.

TRG is well experienced in everything from JTAG based application firmware updates to hard coded board-level updates. Firmware update programs have been implemented on such consumer electronics as cellular telephones, GPS units, LCD/Plasma TV's, and computer peripherals.

Cosmetic Restoration: Counterbalanced 6000 RPM Jewelers' buffing wheels, specially formulated buffing agents, polishing compounds and polycarbonate plastic resurfacing liquids are used to buff and polish selected products back to like new condition. Capabilities also include resurfacing of aluminum, stainless steel, and lexan/plexiglas.

Cosmetic Restoration is used widely in all facets of reconditioning by TRG from light touch to heavy repair on iPod, Zune, Wii, and Apple Peripherals (Mice, Keyboards, Routers, Time Capsules, Apple TV and Airport) devices, as well as small appliances (coffee makers, food processors, food sealers, deep fryers, crock pots etc.)

Re-accessorizing/Re-kitting: Similar to our Parts Harvesting procedures, all accessories are tested for functionality, sanitized/cleaned, and repackaged to OEM specifications. For products such as ear buds, any signs of use will result in the accessory being discarded and replaced with new. All products processed are repackaged and shipped with all original accessories and peripherals as would be included if the product were new.

Extended Warranty Exchange: TRG offers extended-warranty/exchange programs. An example of this service is running with a national electronics retailer. iPods warranty replacement has help them reduce costs and increase turn times.
